Issue 4:What do I know aboutSOUTH-EAST ASIA?

Southeast Asia or Southeastern Asia is a subregion of Asia, consisting of the countries that are geographically south of China, east of India and north of Australia. The region lies on the intersection of geological plates, with heavy seismic and volcanic activity.
Southeast Asia consists of two geographic regions: the Asian mainland, and island arcs and archipelagoes to the east and southeast. The Asian mainland section consists of Cambodia, Laos, a part of Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam; the population of which are primarily Tai peoples and Austroasiatic peoples and the dominant religion is Buddhism. Maritime Southeast Asia consists of Brunei, East Timor, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines.

i would want to know more abouth the environment, people, ethic groups, distinct minorities like the Peranakans, Negritos and Filipino Mestizos , more religions that can be found in Southeast Asia and languages.

Issue 3: Total Defence Day 2007

On 15th Feb every year, all schools commemorate Total Defence Day.

a) Do you think it is relevant? Why?
b) How do you think the commemoration of Total Defence Day can be made more meaningful and engaging for the students?

a)Yes, i think that it is revelant as Total Defence is about the different things that we can do everyday in every sector of our society to strengthen our resilience as a nation. When we take National Service seriously, participate in civil emergency exercises, upgrade our skills, build strong bonds with different races and religions, and feel the pride of being Singaporean, we contribute to Total Defence and i feel that all students should know about the importance of it.

b) I think that commemoration could include more action and less talking as schools also teach us about it and that they could teach us things like extinguishing fire and let students try it and ot demostrations. To commemorate Total Defence Day we could do all these and also put billboards or sighboards over the schools to talk about how to equip ourselves before a crisis happens, being vigilant at all times and to expect the unexpected at all times of the day.

The Treaty Of Versailles was fair to a certain extent. To the France it was fair, because Germany have been trying to expand their empires and gain more power by invading France and some other countries. The treaties that ended World War 1 mostly involved the losing side giving up land and restricting their armies, although there were other conditions too. The treaties were made between the Allies and each defeated country separately and were signed at different times. The Treaty Of Versailles, between the Allies and Germany, was signed in June 1919. It was the most complicated, and had the harshest conditions. One of the problems with the Treaty was that the varioud Allies who came to discuss it had widely different aims. This was so even if only the aims of the "Big Three"- the USA, France and Britain- were considered. Representatioves from Russia and Germany were not invited to join in the decision-making. TO the Germans the Treaty Of Versailles was way too harsh for the innocent party but it was fair for those who cause it.

Is history and the study of it neccessary?

History is rather important for people all over the world. I think that people of each country should know their own counrty history"s background well. Whereas for us, we should know more about singapore especially for kids, children or teenagers like us because we had not experience the past that our forefathers might have experienced. Be it if our forefathers had a good life or a tough life, it is always neccesary to know. By knowing about the past we will repeat the rightful things that happened in the past and not repeat the bad things that had happened in the past. It tells us about the World War that involved Singapore and of many lives that are lost. It can be a good learning point for us in order to propell even further in future. You can even discover things or information that you are not familiar with and that people had not even discovered. In conclusion, i think that history is important.
